With sorrow

All of the Supreme Court’s decisions this term has removed protections Americans fought hard for and believed was settled law. The activists on the bench were put there for this very decision today. Roe and Casey are overturned.

Jeff Toobin on CNN said the final draft is virtually identical to the leaked draft. Here are a few quick bits from the dissent of the decision. I don’t really have the stomach right now to go into depth about it.

From the Breyer, Sotomayor, and Kagan dissent:

“With sorrow—for this Court, but more, for the many millions of American women who have today lost a fundamental constitutional protection—we dissent.”

“Whatever the exact scope of the coming laws, one result of today’s decision is certain: the curtailment of women’s rights, and of their status as free and equal citizens.”

They also criticized the other justices for their “cavalier approach to overturning this Court’s precedents.”

Also, don’t forget the New York gun law that was struck down yesterday. Gun laws are not a state’s rights issue, according to SCOTUS, but controlling women is a state’s rights issue. I never thought I would be living through the end of my country, but here we are. Go read the decision in both cases. Both decisions use the language of “history and tradition” in the same way, but guns get more rights than women.

I am devastated in a way I don’t think anyone can begin to understand. Unfortunately, there will be hundreds of thousands of women who will soon understand the anguish I am in right now.

This is a sad day indeed. Our rights to make decisions about our bodies have been stripped away. The implications about other health decisions ( for all persons) and the sanctity of the doctor patient relationship has just been shot full of holes.

    I’m gutted, I’m angry, I am confused.

  3. I can’t comprehend it either. I have no words, just a heart full of rage and sadness that my country has denied me autonomy over my own body. And, yes, it does feel like the slow downfall of America, and so painful to be inside that unwinding.
